Honduran Soles made it into the news this week with ambassador, friend, and husband of co-founder Andrea Smith.
Penn State linebacker Brandon Smith has been nominated to the AFCA Good Works Team, which “recognizes college football standouts from across the country who are committed to service in their communities while maintaining the delicate balance of academic and athletic excellence.”
A fifth-year senior from Lewisburg, Pa., Smith was one of 10 players from the Big Ten nominated for the spot. Former linebacker Ben Kline was the last Nittany Lion to earn a spot on the team in 2015. Stefen Wisniewski was named to the group in 2010 and Wayne Jones earned the distinction in 1994. The team has been around since 1992.
Smith was a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection last year, in addition to being a part of several religious-based community service efforts and mission work. Smith’s wife Andrea and her sister co-founded Honduran Soles, a non-profit which has sent over 12,000 shoes around the world with Smith’s help. The couple traveled to Honduras last year and handed out nearly 1,000 pairs of shoes to children in need.
